Collections
We are proud to hold the largest collection of Monroe-related artifacts, documents, and ephemera in the world.
Because the museum was founded by Monroe’s descendants, most of the collection has been housed in the building since its opening in 1927, having been passed down through generations of the Monroe family. While every part of James Monroe’s life is already well-represented in our collection, we continue to expand and add to our holdings. Monroe pieces occasionally come up at auction, and many Monroe descendants are still finding family treasures in their homes.
